The Reproductive Justice Waiting Room was a reimagined abortion clinic waiting room–a
learning and art project that demystifies the historical, biological and ethical stories
surrounding abortion. The large scale 10’ by 11’ curtain printed with an image of the female
reproductive cycle enclosed and defined the space of the ‘waiting room’
how to perform an abortion is an intergenerational collective of artists working to expand reproductive rights through art and pedagogy. Enacted through abortion herb gardens, workshops, and installations in both arts and clinical settings, how to perform an abortion seeks to demystify the many controversies surrounding the 75,000 year history of fertility management. They are currently producing The Abortion Monument, a ‘garden as monument’ project at Unision Art Center, New Paltz, NY, and recently
created Reproductive Justice Garden and Waiting Room, ongoing, on SUNY Purchase campus.
Working in NY as artist and educator since 1970 Maureen Connor’s collaborative projects have focused on human relationships and social change for more than 20years. Internationally recognized for her feminist work from the eighties and nineties,
she received grants from the Guggenheim, the NEA, NYFA and Anonymous Was a Woman, among others. Co-founder (2016) of reproductive justice collaborative how to perform an abortion, and the service-based collaborative the Institute for Wishful
Thinking (2008), her podcast Shouldn’t We Talk, launching in Fall, 2020, features interviews and discussions about the beginning of the end of patriarchy.
